How To Upgrade WordPress Blog Manually
Stop wondering as to why upgrade your WordPress blog when it’s working all fine. Upgrading helps protecting your blog against hacking and related security threats and getting rid of errors and bugs. After knowing that 83% of the hacked blogs had very old versions, upgrading becomes a necessity. Site maintenance forms an integral part of owning and running one.
Upgrading a WordPress blog can be done either manually or through automatic route with the aid of utilities like Fantastico. People find it hard to get back their plugins and WordPress templates in working condition if upgrading is done in auto mode. Manual upgrading is therefore mostly advisable. Enjoy reading this section and gets hands on upgrading your WordPress blog.
- Log in to your admin panel and ‘export’ all your content matter from the blog, including plugins and widgets. This creates a back up of your files in case things go wrong.
- Now look into the top WordPress bar to click ‘update now’. Since we have decided to do the upgrading manually, go for downloading the new version instead of automatic update. After downloading, extract the files from the downloaded folder.
- Go to FTP (file transfer protocol) and the directory where WordPress files are kept. Before doing anything, please note that few files like ‘wp-config.php’, ‘.htaccess’, ‘wp-content’, wp images folder, wp language folder, are all important. Please don’t delete or alter them.
- Now delete all files other than the files mentioned above. Replace them with the files in the downloaded document.
- Run the upgraded files using http://mydomain.com/blog/wp-admin/upgrade.php and install the new version.
- Finally you need to manually install plugins one by one after installation. A few plugins may not perform due to compatibility issues. You can always note them down and download the compatible ones for free. Also check for your WordPress template’s compatibility with the new version.

Thanks for sharing this tutorial, i was looking for this kinda tut as i was thinking of chcnaging my free host
Thanks again!
Can’t say I’ve ever manually upgraded WordPress and my site is a reasonably complicated one.
I ensure I use solid plugins which have good ratings and check to see what plugins might have been rolled into core as well.
I’m interested to know what the export does though as you glossed over it – does that export everything that you can use to recreate your site again?

The most easiest way to upgrade is download the latest WordPress software from wordpress.org – extract it and upload all the files with ftp in your blog’s root folder where the previous files are.
The idea is just rewriting the old files. No loss- no hassle and it’s updated bang.

Thank you Pavan for this nice and helpful guide! You know this saying “if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it” but it looks like the old version of WordPress has too many security flaws and we must update our blogs in order to keep them as secure as they can be!

Howdy! Quick question that’s entirely off topic. Do you know how to make your site mobile friendly? My web site looks weird when viewing from my iphone. I’m trying to find a theme or plugin that might be able to fix this problem. If you have any recommendations, please share. Many thanks!

Have you ever thought about adding a little bit more than just your articles?
I mean, what you say is important and all. However think
about if you added some great images or video
clips to give your posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with images and video clips, this blog could definitely be one of the most beneficial in its field. Very good blog!

Hi there! I just wanted to ask if you ever have any issues
with hackers? My last blog (wordpress) was hacked
and I ended up losing several weeks of hard work due to no backup.
Do you have any solutions to stop hackers?

Hi Pavan, Great tutorial! Though it’s little bit difficult to upgrade wordpress blog manually but in the above post you’ve mentioned a nice step by step guide. I think it is easy to understand and hope that it would be easy to perform the task manually as well.
Thanks for stopping by Sam. Hope you enjoy reading the geeky posts 🙂
Liked the way you explained here. Manual update is so easy after reading this.
I never upgraded my blog manually. But now after reading this post I would love to give it a try. Thanks for the obvious tutorial.
Hey Pavan. Alright, no doubt these tips are nice. But had a small question in my mind – Why should one do this? I mean, updating automatically is so easy and fast. S why should one waste time in downloading and upoading and then installing the backed up stuff again??
